How to use

How do I get enough blood for a test?

Warm your hands with warm water or massage the finger you intend to lance. Hang your arm down at your side for 10-15 seconds before lancing can also help improve blood flow

How do I apply blood to the test strip?

Hold your hand or forearm still and touch the test strip channel to the drop of blood. The channel will draw the blood up.

How do I insert the test strip into the meter?

Insert the strip with the silver prongs facing down into the test strip port at the top of the meter.

How do I download my test results to a computer?

To download your test results you will first need to contact the ONETOUCH® Customer Care line to obtain your software and cable.

What is a control solution test? When and how should I do one?

A control solution test can tell you if your meter and strips are working properly. You should perform a control solution test when you open a new pack of strips, replaced the batteries in the meter, cleaned the meter or if your meter flashes CONTROL SOLUTION. Also, if you do not agree with a blood glucose test, you can perform a quality control check to check its accuracy.

How do I know if there is enough blood on the test strip?

The channel on the ONETOUCH VERIO® Test Strip must be completely filled to produce a correct reading. If you do not have enough blood, the meter will respond with the message ERROR 4 STRIP FILL PROBLEM and you will need to retest with a new strip.

Diabetes Questions

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not make, or does not properly use, insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps your body use the energy from sugar, starches and other foods.

Who is at risk of getting Type 1 diabetes?

There is a higher risk of getting Type 1 diabetes if you have a family history of Type 1 diabetes or a history of autoimmune diseases.

An autoimmune disease is an illness that occurs when the body tissues are attacked by its own immune system.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes?

With Type 1 diabetes, the body stops creating or using insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body develops a resistance to insulin. Both can be inherited diseases, but Type 2 diabetes can also be caused by lifestyle issues such as obesity.

Is there a cure for Diabetes?

While there is much research going into Diabetes, a cure for the disease is yet to be found.

Are there any activities I can’t do due to my Diabetes?

Most diabetics find that with preparation they can participate in the same activities as everyone else. As long as you can stop for a snack if you feel you may be hypo and read your blood glucose often, you should be able to do almost anything.

What’s the best way to dispose of used syringes, pen needles and lancets?

You should always dispose of your used syringes, pen needles and lancets in an approved sharps container with a secure lid. They are available through pharmacies and Diabetes Australia.

Blood Glucose Testing

Why do I need to test my blood sugar?

Testing your blood sugar allows you to see how if your blood sugar levels within a healthy range, and if they are affected by food, rest, exercise and other factors. Your doctor and health care team will determine your target blood sugar range.

How often should I test my blood sugar (glucose)?

As everybody is different, only you and your doctor can decide how often you should test your blood glucose. If you are taking insulin for your diabetes, you will probably have to test several times throughout the day, while those who take only medication may only need to test once or twice a day. You will probably also need to test more often if you are ill or pregnant.

Should I discard the first drop of blood?

No. As long as you have thoroughly cleaned and dried the finger before lancing, the first drop of blood should give you a good reading.

Can I squeeze the fingertip to get more blood?

Yes, you can. By gently squeezing your fingertip you may find that you are able to get enough blood from a more shallow lancing penetration, which will minimize your pain on lancing.

What is an ideal blood glucose level?

Your doctor will determine what your personal healthy blood glucose range is. A normal range is considered to be around 4-6 mmol/L.

What are ketones and should I test for them?

Ketones are chemicals that are produced when your body breaks down fat. If your insulin levels are insufficient, you may build up toxic levels of ketones. If you are sick you should check for ketones and test your blood sugar regularly.

What can I do to ensure I obtain enough blood?

You can improve blood flow by warming your hands before you test, try running them under warm water and massaging the finger you intend to lance. Make sure you thoroughly wash and dry hands before testing. If you are having trouble getting enough blood, you may need to increase the depth of the lancing device, by rotating the depth selection dial.

Can I test on a plane with my meter? Will altitude affect my meter?

You can test normally on a place, and the altitude should not interfere with your accuracy.

Which Unit of Measurement does Australia use?

It is important to be aware the different countries use different units of measure. Australia uses mmol/L.
